The two sconces are made in a manner to suggest earlier work, but each sconce departs in critical ways from period examples. Among the differences, the crimped tops are very uneven--looking very handmade, unlike the work of 19th century tinsmiths that is regular and controlled. The "pair" of sconces are significantly different sizes, varying by a quarter-inch, again far more difference than would be tolerated in earlier times. Similarly, the shape the gallery in front of the candle socket differs between the two sconces. Unlike period examples, the back is not stiffened by molded reeds or other device. Finally, there is little oxidation or other evidence of natural aging to the metal.
