Inscription

"Surveyed for Mr William Corbit the 9th Day of June 1777 /  Philip Reading" is written across the bottom.  A second, much later inscription is written on the back, "Lot. / 46 perches / on which stands / the Mansion House / Erected by my Father / Wm. Corbit / Danl. Corbit / Cantwells Bridge / 1839" (see accompanying image).

Provenance

The survey descended in the Corbit family to the donor.

Comments

This survey of William Corbit's property, made by Philip Reading in 1777, includes a sketch of the house, showing it before the c. 1790 kitchen was added onto the southwest side.  For another survey, dated 1839, see acc. no. 1963.163.
