Comments
The cobalt-blue glass bowl has a blown hemispherical body that is mounted on an out-flared base. The outer edge of the base is folded under itself to form a foot that resists damage because of the added strength. The underside of the bowl, within the flared base, has a pontil mark.
The outside of the bowl has gilt decoration of a "guilloche," a kind of braid or chain that was used in various decorative arts and architecture. It incorporates a rectangular panel with the phrases “Peace and Plenty" and "Love and Liberty,” which were especially popular in the mid 1810s.
