The "hollow-cut" silhouette was cut out of cream-colored paper and then mounted on black paper to create the needed contrast.  It shows the left profile of Capt. James Jefferis (c. 1758-1822), whose name was recorded along the bottom of the image by Mrs. E. Tatnall (Mary Corbit) Warner.
