Comments

This finely designed and executed plate is known generically as rose medallion, a large and diverse body of Chinese porcelains made for the Western market from about 1820 through much of the 19th century.  They use pinks and greens with lesser amounts of yellow, blue, and black, and are highlighted by gilding.  Typically, the wares are divided into panels with vignettes.

This plate has delicately rendered birds and insects amid floral compositions, with a gold roundel bordered with butterflies in the center.  The plate has a chamfered foot ring; the underside of the plate is unglazed.
