Comments
This smooth-brim 9-inch plate has a single bead on the underside of the brim, there to strengthen the rim. Although worn and obscured by pitting, the marks can be discerned as those of the Bristol partnership of Gregory Ash and William Hutton. An "X" stamped above the hallmarks was a common indicator used by pewterers to denote quality. Similarly, stamps with the words "HARD" and "METAL," flanking "LONDON," a place known for high-quality pewter, represented additional promotional markings of the makers.
