Comments
The 9-inch plate with a single reeded rim was cast in the pewterer's mold. He then hammered the outside of the booge (the rounded edge of the bottom) to compress and harden the metal. This step, along with using high-quality pewter (with little lead) s characteristic of London pewter. Faint touchmarks on the outside bottom of the plate identify the makers at Townsend and Compton, who supplied large amounts of pewter to the American colonies and later the United States.
The plate appears to be the same as accession nos. 1971.871 and 1971.884.
