Comments
This 9-inch plate, marked by the partnership of Townsend and Compton, who supplied large amounts of pewter to the American colonies and later the United States, has a hammered booge (the rounded edge of the bottom) to compress and harden the metal where it absorbs use and abuse. The front of the plate brim has a single bead around the edge. This extra amount of metal reinforced this part of the plate against bending.
The plate appears to be the same as accession nos. 1971.876 and 1971.884.
