Comments
The tall, straight-sided, oval box has a domed, hinged lid with an oval wire handle attached to the center. The top and bottom edges of the lid are rolled for strength, as is the top and bottom of the body of the box. The box is made of sheet iron seamed at the side. The hinged hasp in the center front has a rolled bottom edge.
The box is painted red with yellow and green floral bands, a yellow guilloche band around the lid, and ornate floral compositions on the side. Painted boxes such as this were made in New York and Connecticut, and likely other places as well.
