Comments
The gray cylindrical jar with rounded shoulders has a widely flared neck and mouth. Inside the mouth, the side wall is stepped to accommodate a wooden lid or stopper. The deep flare allows the user to cover the top with an oil cloth or other material to seal the contents further. Jars like this were used in homes to store all kinds of fruits and other foods for later consumption.
William Hare made particularly high-quality stonewares in his French Street pottery. His earliest wares were predominantly earthenwares.
