Comments

This single candlestick, likely available to customers in pairs or larger sets, varied an earlier design by adding an urn shape to the lower half of the columnar shaft.  The rings around the wide part of the urn recall similar rings at the base of the columns that inspired this design.  The shaft stands on a coved pyramidal base, as was common at this time.  The candlestick originally had a push-up ejector to remove the unused candle stub from the shaft.  The wide bobeche at the top caught candle drips.

For a similar candlestick design that varies the columnar format, see accession no. 1959.3778.
