Comments

This single candlestick, which was likely available to buyers as a multiple set, varies a columnar design by substituting a baluster shaft.  Smaller changes include rings and placement of the baluster on a reel.  Both versions stand on a coved pyramidal base.  The candlestick has a push-up ejector to remove the candle stub.  The wide bobeche at the top was designed to catch candle drips.

The design of this candlestick follows one in a group of 24 engraved pages forming an English brass-founder's catalogue or pattern book of candlesticks.  No identification accompanies the plates, but several have 1797 watermarks dating the paper.  The plates were published privately as Brass Candlesticks by English brass dealer Rupert Gentle in 1973.  A detail from p. 4 is attached.

For another variation of this general design, see accession no. 1971.795.
