Inscription

A hand-written label formerly attached to the outside bottom says, “Cap. & Debbie Jefferis / 1770-80- / Canton ware made / in Canton China / Sometimes called / Lowestoph [sic].”

Condition Notes

The bowl has several stress cracks and staple repairs.

Provenance

Ex coll. Mrs. E. Tatnall (Mary Corbit) Warner.  A label, likely written by her in the early 20th century, implies that the bowl belonged to Capt. James Jefferis and his wife, parents of Ann Jefferis who married William Corbit's son Daniel.

Comments

The white, round Chinese export porcelain bowl stands on a vertical foot.  The exterior is decorated with two large and two small (alternating) floral motifs painted in green, orange, purple, and pink.  The inside of the rim has a meandering line of purple dots with floral motifs above and green and pink dotted devices below.  A small purple flower is at the bottom.
