Comments

The precisely rendered watercolor picture on cream-colored paper shows a basket of flowers:  a large rose, rose buds, pansies, and green leaves arranged in a strap-handled basket.  The basket stands on a platform.  The picture is framed in a late-19th-century black frame with incised decoration picked out in tan on the front.

Margaret Janvier Hort (1899-1981), the collector and preserver of Janvier-family papers and artifacts, identified the artist as Mary Gaw Janvier, a daughter of Thomas and Mercy Janvier of New Castle, Delaware.  Mary married John Lewden Robeson (1804-1867).
