4-slat side chair
Delaware Valley, possibly Philadelphia
40-1/2 in x 19 in x 15-1/4 in
Maple, rush (seat)
Historic Odessa Foundation, gift of H. Rodney Sharp
The green paint is from the mid-20th century and covers wear on the front stretcher and an earlier coat of white. The seat has gaps in the woven rush and places where existing rush has been tied to prevent further deterioration.

The 4-slat side chair has attractively arched slats and finely turned finials. Detailed baluster turnings animate the tops of the front legs and the ball-and-reel feet, which appear to be original. The ring-and-ball front stretcher ends in deeply flared cones, now worn by users’ feet. The top and third slats are pegged into the tapered rear posts.
