A maker’s mark stamped into the underside of the shaft near the handle appears to read, “H & W”.

Comments

The cast pewter tablespoon has a long and deep oval bowl.  The handle is narrow and slightly deeper than its width near the bowl.  Both the bowl and handle shapes are not typical of pewter spoons made in the early 19th century or before.  The spoon bears a rectangular maker’s mark on the back of the handle shaft near where it broadens out.   The lettering is spread horizontally to a greater extent than typical early 19th century marks.  The mark is too worn to read with any certainty.

This spoon is identical to four spoons and one fragment catalogued as a set of five (accession no. 1971.947).  It likely completes an original set of six spoons.
