The printed textile label of "Interior Decorator / ERNEST LoNANO / 127 EAST 59TH ST. N.Y.” is sewn onto the dust cover attached to the slip seat.

Condition Notes

The tops of the legs have split in the corners because of pressure from the slip seat.

Comments

The rectangular stool has four Marlborough legs joined by an H stretcher, the medial stretcher of which attaches with half-dovetails.  The top edges of the side rails and legs are molded with a central bead between two fillets.  That molding runs down the outside edges of the legs.  The legs are chamfered on the inside.

Although accurately made in the style of the late 18th century, several features suggest that this stool is out-of-period.  It has no wear on the bottom of the legs (or anywhere else).  The triangular corner blocks inside the frame are attached with modern nails and look new.  The slip seat frame in made of mahogany rather than of a less expensive secondary wood.

The red leather upholstery appears to be of mid-20th century origin.
