Although transferred to Winterthur in 1969 as part of The David Wilson Mansion, Inc., collection ascribed to Mrs. Mary Corbit Warner, these pipes look too new to have been made before her death in 1923. Winterthur registration files date them 1950-1969.
Comments
The pair of modern clay tobacco pipes resembles 18th century counterparts. The ends opposite the bowls are painted with a thick stain or thin paint to make them look used. Modern reproductions are sometimes made in early, authentic molds making them all but indistinguishable from the originals, but these pipes are clearly marked with what is likely the E S mark of a modern, but unidentified, maker. A fragment of another pipe bearing accession number 1971.847.3 also accompanies these two pipes.
