Comments
The mold from which this oval bowl or serving dish was made incorporated diapered or crosshatched panels joined by incised scroll decorations on the inside walls. This decoration recalls molded plates of 1750-1775 made in Staffordshire, England, and popularly called Whieldon ware. To date, no direct tie has been found between this dish and the earlier examples. The rim on the bowl is scalloped. Adding to the visible complexity--and suggesting the time of manufacture--the brown glaze is mottled and applied onto the yellow earthenware ceramic body in a manner associated with Rockingham wares.
