Condition Notes

The candlestick is slightly bent off the vertical axis and has dents in the shaft and sides of the base.  A molding defect at the top of the baluster turning above the middle of the shaft has been repaired with a brass fill.

Comments

Stylistic features of this candlestick indicate that it was made after the mid-19th century.  The base is an elongated hexagon.  The complex turnings of the shaft incorporate many traditional elements, but their arrangement has no early counterparts.  Construction of the candlestick is also late.  It is cast in two pieces, namely the turned shaft and the base, rather than being cast in halves and soldered together to form a shaft.  

Given the properties of this candlestick, it may have been made to evoke earlier examples.  It was catalogued among the hundreds of household furnishings acquired by Mary Corbit Warner for the Wilson house, which she acquired and re-furnished, mostly with items of earlier family ownership.
