Condition Notes

Both candlesticks are deeply pitted.  The ejector is missing from one candlestick, accession no. 1959.3890.1.  On candlestick .2, a small section of the bottom edge of the base has rusted away.

Comments

The two candlesticks have shafts constructed of rolled sheet iron that is attached to domed bases with a nut and bolt on the underside and applied rims or bobeches around the top that catch candle drippings.  Originally catalogued as a pair, these two candlesticks differ slightly in size and in the shape of the domed base.  Given how common these "hog scrapers" were, these small differences likely indicate separate original sources.  The hogscraper term, a popular rather than historic term, derives from the shape of the base.
