Condition Notes

The underside of the top has several screw holes that have no connection to the table base, raising the possibility that the top is a replacement of reused wood.  The color of the top matches the base well.

Comments

The cherry stand, also called a candlestand, has a bold baluster-turned shaft above three cabriole legs sawn from flat boards of uniform thickness.  The base of the baluster is above a narrow reel.  The top of the baluster has a thin collar below a reel. A cherry cross piece attaches to the top with four screws.  The flat top has a chamfered or angled edge with no molding.  The top is small in proportion to the base.

Several features of this stand suggest that it was made outside of an urban furniture-making community. They include the edge shaping of the top, the thin reel at the base of the baluster, the flat modeling of the legs, and small details of the turnings.
