Comments

This 5-slat side chair with delicately arched slats and bold ball-and-reel finials also features a fully developed ring-and-ball turned front stretcher and baluster turnings near the tops of the front legs.  Unlike most other turned slat-back maple chairs, the maple used in this chair has a visible stripe that may have been featured with a clear coating, rather than a stain or paint.  Incised lines cut into the turned rear posts mark the tops of the slat mortises.  Only the top slat is pinned, as was customary in such early turned chairs.
