Comments

This simple slat-back chair has few physical attributes to suggest where and when it was made.  The form was made throughout the United States, and maple was the favored wood almost everywhere.  The box stretchers, tapered feet, and ball finials were used broadly, as were slats of graduated size.  Chairs of this sort made in the greater Philadelphia region typically--but not always--had arches cut into the undersides of the slats too.

The chair has black paint over red, probably applied sometime in the mid-20th century.  The black has begun to delaminate.
